Using Extension Jambs Just Like The Pros

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Jessica Ackerman

Door jambs are the vertical portions of a door frame on both the hinge and strike side of the door. The door jambs are used to mount the door frame to the wall. Most door jambs in homes are made from wood, and after the door trim is installed, most of the jamb surfaces are no longer visible. In most cases the existing door jambs are of the proper thickness to match the depth of the wall that surrounds the door, but sometimes there is a discrepancy, with the wall coming out further than the door jamb. In situations like these, extension jambs are used to bring the jamb out to the proper thickness to match that of the wall.

Measuring and Cutting the Extension Jambs

The depth of the extension jambs needs to be the difference between the depth of the existing door jam and the outside face of the wall surrounding the door. Measure carefully, because the depth might vary slightly between the two sides of the existing door jamb. The extensions can be cut from strips of lumber, or from a spare door jamb. For door trim that will be painted, pine is fine to use for extension jambs, but when using a stain or clear finish, woods such as maple, poplar or oak to match the door trim would be the best choice. The extensions will be cut to the same width as the measurement between the existing jambs and the wall surface. A piece will also need to be cut to extend the top head piece.

Safety Precautions

Safety is always important when working with tools. Be sure to wear safety goggles, and remember that doors can be heavy and difficult to manipulate, so get some help if necessary.

Installing the Extension Jambs

The door will be installed even with one side of the wall, and on the other side you will install the extension jambs to bring the existing jambs out level with the wall. The extension jambs are installed on the side of the door frame that is opposite the hinges of the door, to prevent problems when opening the door. To attach the extension jambs, use staples or finish nails, measuring to make sure the extensions bring the jamb depth out even with the existing wall surface. Start by installing the top piece first. When held in place, it should fit up against the existing top head piece, with the outer edge flush with the wall. When you are sure it is a good fit, it can be nailed in place. Do not sink the nails, as adjustments might be necessary. Repeat with the vertical pieces of the jamb extension. If there are any uneven areas, shims can be used to adjust the extension jambs. Once all pieces are in place, measure and check with a level to make sure everything is square and level. Then, sink the nails, fill the nail holes, paint or finish, and proceed with installing the door trim.

Taking Your Dog For A Walk And Taking Care Of His Toilet Needs

Taking your dog for a walk and taking care of his toilet needs

by

Sam Edwards

Apart from when he wakes up and after eating, there’s another time when a puppy may need to urinate and that’s after he’s been playing hard. Be aware of this and take him to his paper or outdoor spot as soon as the game is over. Remember that your puppy is a social creature and wants to please you. So with patience, perseverance, and consistency on your part and the part of family members, house breaking should be a fairly painless procedure for all involved regardless what method you use. When you bring an older dog into your home you’ll need to approach training in a different way. Since the dog is used to other routines, paper training may be a difficult job especially if the dog has never been trained at all. As with a puppy, you can try paper training or regular trips to the outside area designated for the dog’s use. And, as with a younger dog, take the dog outside every two hours and praise him lavishly when he performs in the right place. If A the older dog urinates or defecates in the house, scold him only when you catch him in the act.

Don’t rub his nose in any mess he makes; this may relieve your feelings of anger or frustration, but the dog learns nothing from it. Training your older dog may take as long, or even longer, than training a puppy, but the dog will eventually respond to your verbal encouragement and praise. Once he’s trained, you’ll only need to take him out two or three times a day. One of your responsibilities as a dog owner is to clean up after your dog. In some areas you’re legally required to do so. But even where no specific legal restrictions exist, common sense tells you that the health of your dog depends on the cleanliness of his surroundings. Parasites and germs are transferred in the feces, and if waste is not removed regularly the dog will re infect himself and infect other dogs. If your dog uses your back yard or a dog run for voiding, try training him to use an area of concrete or some other hard surface rather than a grassy or overgrown area

that cannot easily be washed down. Remove the feces immediately and get rid of them. The same applies if your dog voids off your property. It’s your responsibility to remove the feces and dispose of them. This is particularly important in urban areas where there are heavy concentrations of dogs many of which are, unfortunately, allowed to run loose. Constant soiling of the ground in such areas makes for a year-round parasite problem. There are a number of commercial ‘pooper-scoopers” on the market that you can use to remove your dog’s feces. Some of these have long handles so you don’t have to bend. Or you can use a small shovel and a plastic bag it’s just as effective. If every dog owner regularly cleaned up after his pet, the streets would be healthier and more pleas ant for everyone, and there would be less hostility between people who own dogs and people who don’t.

Turn Your Garage Into A Game Room

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Jimmy Mathews

A game room is a great addition to any home, and in many cases it is a better alternative to keeping a vehicle in the garage (or if you have a two car garage, converting one side of it into a game room). If you’re looking for some private space to watch the game, or maybe a big enough space to put that pool table you’ve had your eye on, the garage just might be the answer you have been looking for. Turning your garage into a game room is an easy, great, cost-effective way to get the game room convenience without having to sacrifice space elsewhere, or having to put a foosball table in a place where it doesn’t belong, like the back of the living room. You might even be able to move your television out of the family room to be more conducive to conversation flow.

Where to Start

The first thing you should ask yourself is, ‘what am I doing with my garage already?’ If you’re using your garage for something other than keeping your car, you might think about having a garage sale, or moving those boxes up to the attic or a to a coat closet. Metal buildings aren’t terribly expensive, so if you’re lacking storage space, you might think about having one built. If your garage is where you store your car, then turning your garage into a game room is still possible, depending on the garage’s size. It’s a good idea to test the new situation for a week or so, before you go out and fill up your game room with a bunch of new toys, to make sure it’s safe and not too much of an inconvenience for you.

Now What?

Once you’ve cleared out the space in your garage, you can decide whether to remove the garage doors to make the room appear more like the rest of the house – by adding walls and flooring other than the concrete floor and unfinished walls of most garages. This won’t be too much of a task as garage doors are not “load bearing”. Keep in mind, however, that if you go to sell your home later on down the road, a garage is a big plus – so if you have just a small garage you might be better off converting a room in the basement or elsewhere into a game room or building an extension onto the home. If you do just keep your regular garage doors, you may want to consider adding additional security features as most garages are the main entry point for most would-be thieves. Billiard tables are a nice addition to any game room, but be sure you have an enough space or bigger space to allow for a 4-6 foot perimeter around the table for your shooting space. If you are going to have a TV in your game room, you’ll have to first make sure you have all the proper electrical and cable accommodations for it.
